hookah. 1. An electrically powered breathing device that floats on the surface of the water or sits on the deck of a boat and that allows snorkelers to dive to shallow depths without the use of scuba tanks. Also called a hookah dive rig. 2. A water pipe with several long, flexible tubes allowing a number of people to share the same bowl of tobacco; popular in the Middle East and, increasingly, elsewhere.
