group shell. A portion of a cruise ship's inventory that has been segregated or set aside in the line's reservation system to accommodate a travel agent or agency that is attempting to complete a group booking of a specified size. If the group is not fully booked by a certain date, the unsold inventory in the shell is made available for booking by other agencies.
