dolphin. A freestanding structure in a port or elsewhere that extends above the water line and can be used to tie up ships. Such structures are usually separate from the shore or docks and typically consist of a number of arranged wooden or concrete poles spaced at regular intervals. Access to ships moored at these structures is by boat. See also mooring dolphin.
