dictatorship. A form of government in which a single individual, who has often seized power by force, exercises complete and often arbitrary control over all aspects of government. Some dictatorships employ the trappings, but not the substance, of other, more open forms of government. Some dictators also attempt to make their power hereditary. North Korea is an example of a dictatorship.
