marathon. A foot race of exactly 26 miles, 385 yards, the distance run by the Phidippides in 490 B.C. to announce the Greek victory at the Battle of Marathon. After delivering the news, Phidippides died of exhaustion. Today, marathon races attract large numbers of participants and tourists in cities around the world.
